Preliminary yield trial of selected mungbean lines set I and II

From the 2 sets of preliminary yield trials, Set I where the twelve F7-mungbean lines selected from the full diallel crosses among 6 parental lines i.e. VC1560D (resistant to powdery mildew and cercospora leaf spot disease), KPS1 and KPS2 (high yielding, recommended and also resistant to both diseases) with 3 high yielding and good agronomic performance lines, VC2745-77, VC2724-13 and VC2742-26, were grown for the preliminary yield trial. The standard cultivars used in this trial were KPS1 and KPS2. The results revealed the 4 promising lines that having highly resistance to both powdery mildew and cercospora leaf spot disease. These lines also gave remarkably better yield and yield components than the standard cultivars. They were (VC2742-26 x VC2724-13)-1-2-2, (VC2742-13 x KPS2)-8-13-1, (VC2742-26 x VC2742-13)-1-1-3 and (VC2742-26 x VC2742-13)-1-5-1. In Set II where based on the criteria of greater seed yield over 300 kg/rai, better yield components i.e., number of pods per plant and seeds per pod and 1000 seeds weight as well as high first harvest percentage, 10 mungbean breeding lines from the AVRDC selected from the 1992 experiment were grown in the field together with 2 check cultivars, KPS1 and KPS2. By visual observation for the disease reaction to powdery mildew and cercospora leaf spot and other agronomic traits, 4 lines were selected accordingly to their similar levels of disease resistance but having greater seed yield and some other better traits. These lines were (VC3890A x VC4452C2)-2-4B-2, (VC2768A x VC4457C2)-2-4B-1, (VC3890A x VC3767C2)-1-4B-1 and (V3726 x VC4441C2)-2-4B-1.
