Comparative study anatomy of dog's brain from 4 preparation techniques

Four dog's brains were removed from formaldehyde fixed dog. Three brains were cut into 5 mm slices in coronal plane. Brain slices from the first brain were stored in 10 percent formalin. Slices from the second brain were stained with luxol fast blue. Slices from the third brain were prepared as sheet plastination brain slices. The fourth brain was dissected to expose brainstem. Gross brainstem was used as a sample to sculpture and mold polyester rasin brainstem model. Brain slices stained with luxol fast blue and sheet plastination brain slices showed good contrast between gray matter and white matter. They were given more detail of internal structure and nuclear groups compared to 10 percent formalin fixed brain. The disadvantage of luxol fast blue brain slice is the fading of stained slice when store in 10 percent formalin. The disadvantage of sheet plastination brain slice is the difficulty of specimen preparation and the high price of chemical. Polyester rasin brainstem model was given good detail of external structure the same as gross brainstem and will be advantage for teaching a large group of students in the laboratory.
