In 1997 and 1998, in the Vojvodina Province, Serbia (Yugoslavia), 5177 ha and 13699 ha approximately, were surveyed in order to determine the incidence and distribution of the Beet Necrotic Yellow Vein Virus (BNYVV), the causer of rhizomania in sugar beet on the fields in Vojvodina. The survey covered about 10% of total sugar beet acreage in 1997 and about 27% in 1998. The BNYVV was found on 26.2% in 1997, and 27.6% in 1998 of the acreage involved. The survey shown that the BNYVV is not equally widespread in all sugar beet growing areas of Vojvodina. The regions of Srem and Banat had the high incidence of the virus, while in region of Backa the incidence of the virus was much lower, than in other parts of Vojvodina in both years.
