Possibilities for the control of harmful organisms in sunflower by treating the seed with insecticides

During 1998, we studied insecticide efficacy by treating sunflower seeds against soil pests (larvae of the family Elateridae) and the leaf curl plum aphid (Brachycaudus helichrysi). The trial was conducted on a calcareous chernozem and the sunflower hybrid NS-H-111 was used. In trial were used several (mostly) sistemic insecticides. The parameters used to evaluated the efficacy of these insecticides were as follows: stand density, plant height, leaf area level and severity of attack by the leaf curl plum aphid (Brachycaudus helichrysi), level of attack by white stem rot (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum), and grain yield and oil yield per hectare. To summarize, the two insecticides that stand out in terms of efficacy are thiamethoxam and imidakloprid, while all the others belong in another, less effective, group.
