There are two types of eriophyoid mites pests: the free-living eriophyoids or rust mites, and those that live much of their lives within a shelter, the gall or bud mites. Gall or bud mites had been recognized in this country some time ago, but during the past decade the rate of damage caused by rust mites has been increased. The most important eriophyoid species on pears are: pear rust mite, Epitrimerus pyri (Nal.), and pear blister and bud mite, Eriophyes pyri (Pgst.). This paper presents host plants, distribution, damage, bioecology and control of these important pests of pears.
