Infestations of parsnip (Pastinaca sativa L.) by Phytoecia icterica Schall. (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae) have been recorded in the region of Srem, Serbia (Yugoslavia), each year since 1983. Plant injury caused by the development of the larvae in the root of the host has been as high as 80%. The biology of this species in Yugoslavia is not known, but in Hungary Phytoecia icterica is known to have one generation and overwinter as an adult in the infested plants (Jermy, Balazs, 1990). Since little is known about this and other Phytoecia species in Yugoslavia, this paper describes, based on reports from other countries, the morphological characteristics of Phytoecia icterica larvae and imagos and the species harmfulness to Pastinaca sativa and offers a review of the literatura data on the other pests of the genus Phytoecia.
