Production of methylarbutin from 4-methoxyphenol by biotransformation of cultured cells of woody plant, coffea arabica

Calli were induced from leaves of young trees of Coffee, Coffea arabica, on Murashige-Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and kinetin. The induced calli were subcultured on the same medium. The cultured cells were obtained by cell suspension cultures of the calli in the MS liquid medium. 4-Methoxyphenol, substrate was converted to methylarbutin having anti-inflammatory and urinary antiseptic actions by biotransformation of cultured cells from Coffea arabica. The maximum yield of methylarbutin to the substrate was obtained when 1 mM of the substrate was added to the cell suspension cultures and incubated for 1 day. The yield was 22.7% of the substrate
