Quality maintenance of cut lotus flower (Nelumbo nucifera Caertn) by low temperature

In Aichi prefecture, cut lotus flowers are usually shipped during the hot summer season. This causes their petals to darken and drop off during transport which is a serious problem. Experiments were carried out to devise quality maintenance by low temperature in combination with plastic film packing. Temperatures of 5-10 degrees C were found to be good in avoiding the occurrence, of the above phenomenon. Plastic film packing was effective in maintaining the appearance of the flowers. Chilling injury occurred at 3 degrees C. This was confirmed by the Arrhenius-plot in which break point of the rate of electrolyte leakage from petal discs was observed at about 3 degrees C. An ethylene treatment to the cut flower did not injure its petals at all. It was concluded that cut lotus flowers are insensitive to ethylene in relation to petal abscission
