Validation of OCTS-derived chlorophyll-a concentration and oceanic structure in the Kuroshio Oyashio inter-frontal zone [Japan]

As a preliminary study on the use of OCTS chlorophyll-alpha (Chl-alpha) maps for fisheries and oceanographic studies, version 3.0 OCTS Chl-alpha products were validated with sea surface Chl-alpha data and compared with the oceanic structure, current field and fishing rounds in temperate coastal Pacific waters during April to June 1997. Underestimation of OCTS values for high Chl-alpha concentrations and ghost patterns in coastal areas suggest that the algorithm need to be improved. OCTS images depicted detailed Chl-alpha distributions associated with the hydrography and current field. The high Chl-alpha frontal eddies near the crest of the Kuroshio Extension (KE) might be caused by a combination of advection of the KE front and an upwelling due to a cyclonic eddy. Fishing grounds during this period were often distributed in and around the high Chl-alpha area of the frontal eddy and another coastal eddy. These results suggest that t\high Chl-alpha waters might be one of the important factors enhancing fishing ground formation. OCTS Chl-alpha images are useful to clarify the detailed biological processes
