Developmental potential for tomato processing industries: Case study of tomato paste, tomato sauce and sardines in tomato sauce

Main objective of this study is to analyze the trend of market demand for tomato paste, tomato sauce and sardines in tomato sauce products. The result of the tomato paste product study shows that the demand for domestic market has tendency to increase approximately 40,440 tons per year. The tomato paste industry has an oligopoly market structure. There is some uncertainty in foreign market demand because of the inconsistency in product quality. That causes the uncertainty in a comparative advantage in exporting tomato paste of Thailand to the major markets such as Japan and South Korea. The result of the tomato sauce study shows that the demand for domestic market which is the main market has tendency to increase, approximately 5,282 tons per year. The tomato sauce industry has an oligopoly market structure. Foreign market demand has tendency to increase approximately 93.29 percent per year. Thailand has a comparative advantage in exporting tomato sauce expecially to countries nearby such as Hong Kong and Singapore. The result of the sardines in tomato sauce study shows that the demand for domestic market has tendency to increase approximately 50,149 tons per year. Because of a lacking of data, this study connot shows the market structure of sardines canned industry. Foreign market demand has tendency to increase 43.14 percent per year. Furthermore, Thailand has a comparative advantage in exporting the sardines canned to all markets, but has tendency to decrease probably because of raw materials, wage and transportation costs have tendency to increase. Therefore, the action programs that government should support including promoting to increase the quantity and quality of fresh tomatoes and reduce customs tariff for importing sardines, promoting the improvement of the production efficiency and more supporting producers to join the exhibition in other countries.
