Batch distillation of binary and ternary mixtures in a pilot plant column

The aim of this paper is the investigation of the influence of feed composition and reflux ratio on operation of a distillation column in the separation of methanol-water mixture. The feed concentrations in terms of methanol were 5, 10, 15 and 20% wt. The reflux ratios were 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and total reflux (R(T)). The thermometers at each of even plates of the column measured the temperature of liquids. The effect of the feed composition on the temperature and concentration profiles, distillate and bottom product compositions was determined. The comparison of the temperature and concentration profiles (based on the total alcohol content) for the binary ethanol-water, and methanol-water mixtures, as well as the ternary methanol-ethanol-water mixture, which had the same feed composition, was made.
