The codling moth, Cydia pomonella L., is one of the most important pests of pome fruits world-wide. Although everybody is familar with this notorious pest, it is often forgotten that codling moth is not indigenous to North America and Europe, and has invaded almost all areas of apple production throughout the world (with the exception of Japan and eastern China) from the region of origin in Central Asia. Consequently the codling moth is devoid of specialized natural enemies throughout most of its expanded range. In the absence of natural enemies codling moth populations are limited only by the availability of suitable fruit and the application of control treatments. Biological control has the potential to reduce local and regional populations of codling moth in Europe and North America through importation of specialized parasitoids from Central Asia, the region of origin of apples
