In Estonia, the first scientific records about powdery mildews on foreign trees and shurbs date back to a distant past. As early as in 1856, A.H. Dietrich wrote that a powdery mildew fungus - Microsphaera lonicerae (DC.) Wint. (sub Calcladia ehrenbergii lev.) - was common on the leaves of Tartar honeysucles (Lonicera tatarica L.) growing in Estonia. To date, a large number of studies have been published on powdery mildew fungi inhabiting the introduced trees and shrubs in Estonia.
