Institutional innovation: a practical alternative for China's agriculture in the beginning of the new century

Agriculture in China at the turn of the new century has many problems that cannot be ignored: individual farms that are too small, production and commodity distribution patterns that are disjointed, comparative benefit of agriculture on the decline, and the slowing down of farmers' profit margins. Restrictions of the existing production organizational structure are the major causes of these problems. Institutional innovations, therefore, that establish various mechanisms to integrate agricultural operations that effectively connect innumerable small farmers with changeable market are essential. New models are needed that would allow agricultural operations at a moderate scale. A new model, "land a stock" cooperatives, which allow for the develoment of agricultural industrialization, is discussed as an alternative to advance agriculture in China in the new century
