Survey of major insect pests of mango and their natural enemies in Region 11 South Eastern Mindanao [Philippines]

A survey was conducted at the different mango areas within Region 11 or South Eastern Mindanao [Philippines] to determine the most important insect pests infesting and damaging the different parts of the tree such as twigs, flushes, eaves, flowers and fruits. The most predominant insect pest of mango recorded during the survey is the scale insect. Scale insect is very destructive and persistent pest and one of the hardest to control. Fifty-five percent of the location surveyed showed scale infestation ranging from 5-95 percent. Observations revealed that scale insect is becoming a major pest problem in mango plantings as observed from the backyard to large plantations. A number of potentially damaging insects were also observed namely: tip borer, mango hopper, seed borer, and mealy bugs; minor pests includes pachyrynchid beetles, flower thrips and ants. The natural enemies encountered and collected from the field were two species of predaceous coccinellid beetles feeding on all stages of the scale insect. These coccinellid beetles are sp. 1 identified as Telsimia nitida and sp. 2 as Chilocorus nigrita. A species of fungus initially identified as Hirsutella sp was also observed to attack both the nymphs and adult mango hopper with 77-100 percent fungal infection. Several species of spiders were also observed to be preying on mango hoppers
