In recent decades considerable attention has been paid to the role of salicylic acid as a signal transmitter in the development of biotic stress resistance. In addition, however, it has been shown to have many other effects, such as the induction of heat production through the stimulation of alternative oxidase activity. In recent years there is growing evidence that it plays a role in defence against not only biotic, but also various types of abiotic stress factors.
