Aerial survey of Dugong (Dugong dugon) in Andaman Coast, Thailand

Dugong (Dugong dugon) is considered as an endangered marine mammal in Thai waters. An aerial survey of dugong along the Andaman Coast, Thailand was done by using a flying boat "Polaris" All surveys were flown at air speed of 70-80 km/hr with an altitude of 200-1,000 feet. Surveys were made at eight stations of seagrass beds which covered the area of 100-200 square km in Phang-nga, Krabi, Trang and Satul Provinces during 31 January 1997 to 10 April 1997. The dugongs were found as follow: 1) 3 dugongs at Bantung-nangdam. Phang-nga Province; 2) 5 dugongs at Banthalane, Krabi Province; 3) 5 dugong at Cham Island, Poo Island and Sriboya Island, Krabi Province; 4) no dugong be found at Sukorn Island, Trang Province 5) 6 dugongs at Muk Island, Hat Yong Ling and Khao Baena, Trang Province; 6) The maximum number of 28 dugongs including 3 cow-calf pairs at Talibong Island, Trang Province 7) no dugong be found at Ban Leam Hin to Ban Leam Sai, Trang Province and 8) 1 dugong at Sarai Island, Satun Province. Dolphin, green turtle and hawkbill turtle were also found in some seagrass area.
