Use of chitosan to treat the waste water from seafood processing plant

Non-toxic biopolymer from shrimp waste, chitosan, was shown to be an effective agent for coagulation of proteinaceous substance and suspended solids in seafood processing wastes. The recovery process involved injection of chitosan solution into the waste water and adjusted the pH of final solution by HCl or NaOH. Removal of the coagulated solids by chitosan treatment was done by gravity settling. This study showed that suitable condition was 10 ppm of chitosan in waste water at pH 4.7. By this way the suspended solids and the biological oxygen demand (BOD) were reduced to 60-90 percent and 50-80 percent, respectively. In addition, the proteinaceous by-products from this treatment contain adequate amounts of proteins which can be used as feed additives in feed stuff production.
