Factors affecting nitrogen concentration in spring oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.)

Field experiments were carried out in order to evaluate the effect of the duration of the growth season, mean daily temperature, precipitation rate, growing degree days, nitrogen rates and application time, soil nitrogen content and population density on nitrogen concentration in spring rape plants, mature seeds and straw. N concentration was the highest in the youngest plants. The increase of duration in growth season and precipitation rate had a negative effect on N concentration in mature seeds, whereas the increase in growing degree days and mean daily temperature had a positive influence. A correlation was found between N concentrations in spring rape plants at different growth stages and weather, whereas population density had a negligible effect. N fertilizer rates showed strong positive effect on N concentration in aboveground dry matter as well as in seeds and straw. N concentration increased with the delay of N application time.
