Vegetative propagation of Jatropha curcas (Linn) by stem cuttings
1987
Abebrese, I. K.
The aim of the project was to investigate the rootability of Jetropha curcas (Linn) under ordinary field conditions with a view to making recommendations for its vegetative propagation. An experiment with a total of 360 cuttings made up of 120 each of hardwood, semi-hardwood and softwood cuttings of the species were conducted. Each cutting measuring 15 centimeters was planted vertically on beds constructed on the farm site of the Institute of Renewable Natural Resources. The following treatments were applied to the cuttings before planting: storage, no storage, and hormone treatment. Results obtained indicated that hardwood and semi-hardwood cuttings could be suitable for plantation projects, especially when they are rooted under ordinary field conditions. Softwood cuttings were found to be unsuitable for planting. It was found that both hardwood and semi-hardwood cuttings, which were, planted fresh without hormones compared favourably with those stored and treated with hormones. The performance of the cuttings of both types which were stored but which were not treated with hormones was poor.
