Concludes that this or any other uniform system is unsuitable for bringing an intimate mixture of (a) slow-growing valuable species and (b) fast-growing light-demanders into a final crop, with anything but a low % of (a). To get more of (a) requires frequent and uneconomic thinning. A selection system (standard practice in the districts) is suggested as better for this purpose (cf. F.A. 23 No. 4976]. To obtain the maximum production of a wide range of utility species, among which there will be a number of (b), would entail drastic canopy openings-a relatively easy and cheap operation.
