Vitex fischeri Gurke (syn. V. keniensis) (fam. Verbenaceae), or Meru oak, is a popular tree species in East Africa. The tree is valued for its high-quality timber and fast growth. It does well in commercial plantations and is appreciated by small-scale farmers as an agroforestry species. The species is classified as threatened and, therefore, its natural populations are candidates for conservation and improvement programmes. However, there is a lack of information on its reproductive biology and the diversity of its existing gene pool. Therefore a study was carried out on the reproductive biology and genetic structure of the species to characterize and delimit its populations for the purpose of initiating appropriate conservation measures and its improvement strategy.
