Research was concerned in the efficiency of combined fixed film and activated sludge system for treating household wastewater. The system was designed in the basic of improving the removal efficiency of the activated sludge system by adding the fiber plate into the aeration tank. The experiments were carried out with synthetic wastewater was similar to the household wastewater, contained COD, BOD, TKN and phosphorus as the concentration of 350.0,250.0,40.0 and 6.0 mg/l, respectively. The system was operated under BOD loading of 0.40, 0.50, 0.65, 0.80 and 1.00 kg BOD/cubic m-day. The results showed that the system could treat COD, BOD, TKN and phosphorus in the wastewater about 89.58+-1.15 percent, 91.74+-0.40 percent, 73.91+-0.74 percent and 23.49+-1.80 percent, respectively under the lowest BOD loading of 0.40 kg BOD/cubic m-day. But, the removal efficiencies of the system were decreased with the increasing of BOD loading. The COD and BOD removal yields of the system were reduced from 89.58+-1.15 percent and 91.74+-0.40 percent to 71.45+-3.28 percent and 81.20+-2.05 percent, respectively when the BOD loading of the system were increased from 0.40 to 1.00 kg BOD/cubic m-day. However, the quality of effluent from the system was passed the standard permission of Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of Thailand for the household wastewater (effluent BOD sub (5)60 mg/L) even the system was operated under the highest BOD loading of 1.00 kg BOD/cubic m-day. The BOD, TKN, SS concentrations and pH of the effluent from the system under 1.00 kg BOD/cubic m-day were 42.38+-5.51 mg/l, 35.54+-0.82 mg/l, 30.00+-2.00 mg/l and 6.47+-0.10, respectively. From the results above, it could say that this system might be used for treating the household wastewater as the on-site treatment unit each house.
