Since mulberry leaves are the only natural food for silkworm, a possible of purified mulberry leaf lectin in activating or inhibiting the diestive enzymes of silkworm was investigated. The effect of a lectin, Con A to the digestive enzyme activity was also studied for comparison purpose. The alpha-amylase and alkaline phosphatase activities in the digestive juice and midgut extract as well as the trehalase activity in the midgut extract of the silkworm were not affected by the mulberry leaf lectin and Con A. In contrast, both mulberry leaf lecting and Con A slightly stimulated the alkaline protease activity in digestive juice and strongly stimulated the enzyme activity in the midgut extract.
