Effect of Meloidogyne javanica and M. incognita on resistance of muskmelon cultivars to Fusarium wilt [Cucumis melo L.]

A growth chamber experiment was carried out to study the interaction between Meloidogyne javanica and/or M. incognita and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis, using 3 muskmelon cultivars differing in their resistance to the fungus. Inoculations were carried out: l. with the wilt fungus alone, 14 and 28 days after transplanting; 2. with the fungus plus one or both root-knot nematodes, either directly upon transplanting or 14 or 28 days after transplanting. During the test, all cultivars, irrespective of their initial resistance to wilt, almost completely lost their resistance when infected with M. javanica; resistance was also impaired but to a less extent with M. incognita. Wilting of 100% in the resistant and moderately resistant cultivars inoculated with M. javanica + F. oxysporum f. sp melonis occurred 14 days earlier than in muskmelon inoculated with the fungus alone. Also, M. javanica was more severe on plants than M. incognita. In all the 3 cultivars, both root-knot nematodes hastened expression of plant wilting, which took 12.1 days with M. javanica, 14.8 days with M. incognita and 12.3 days with both species combined, compared with 22.7 days for plants inoculated with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis alone. Moreover, the onset of wilting required 9-13.3 days when the nematode infection preceded F. oxysporum f. sp. melonis inoculation by 2 weeks, compared with 16.7-19.7 days when the nematode and fungus were inoculated simultaneously 14 days after transplanting, indicating a plant pre-conditioning by the nematode

[E´ stato effettuato un esperimento in cella climatica per studiare l´interazione fra Meloidogyne javanica e/o M. incognita e Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis, utilizzando 3 varietà di melone invernale caratterizzate da resistenza diversa al fungo. Le inoculazioni sono state effettuate; 1. con il fungo da solo, 14 e 28 giorni dopo il trapianto; 2. con il fungo più uno o ambedue i nematodi galligeni, direttamente al trapianto o 14 o 28 giorni dopo il trapianto. Nel corso della prova, tutte le cultivar, indipendentemente dalla loro resistenza iniziale alla fusariosi, hanno perso quasi completamente la resistenza se infestate da M. javanica; la resistenza diminuiva, sebbene in minor misura, con M. incognita. L´appassimento del 100% nelle cultivar resistenti e moderatamente resistenti inoculate con M. javanica + F. oxysporum f. sp. melonis si è riscontrata 14 giorni prima rispetto alle piante inoculate con solo il fungo. Inoltre, l´azione di M. javanica si è dimostrata più grave rispetto a M. incognita. In tutte le 3 cultivar, ambedue i nematodi hanno accelerato l´espressione dell´appassimento, che ha richiesto 12,1 giorni con M. javanica, 14,8 con M. incognita e 12,3 con ambedue le specie , rispetto ai 22,7 giorni delle piante inoculate solo con F. oxysporum f. sp. melonis. Inoltre, la comparsa dell´appassimento ha richiesto 9-13,3 giorni quando l´infestazione dei nematodi precedeva quella del fungo di 2 settimane, rispetto a 16,7-19,7 quando il nematode e il fungo erano inoculati simultaneamente 14 giorni dopo il trapianto, facendo pensare a un pre-condizionamento della pianta da parte del nematode.]
