Barley mixtures as a means of reducing fungicide use

This paper presents yield data for spring barley cultivars and mixtures harvested from field experiments, carried out by the Danish Agricultural Advisory Centre, to assess and rank all cultivars of crops grown by Danish farmers. Registered spring barley cultivars were grown in monoculture to measure their grain yield. Additionally, a mixture of cultivars was tested each year, consisting of four cultivars in equal amounts. These data was analysed to determine how mixtures affect disease incidence and grain yield relative to the mean of their individual cultivars in monoculture. Two years (1993 and 1996), were selected for further investigation. In 1993 there was 6 percent grain yield advantage of the mixture relative to the mean of the cultivars grown in monoculture with no fungicide treatments. This advantage disappeared almost entirely in plots treated with fungicides. In 1996 there was no advantage of the mixture relative to its components either in unsprayed or in sprayed plots.
