A total of 8 and 4 barangays [villages] from Nueva Ecija and Samar, respectively were included in the survey with 75 farmer-respondents from each town. A focus group discussion was also used to elicit information from key informants from villages. Profitability analyses showed that animal production played a major role in augmenting rice farmers' income. Sales from large animals, on the other hand, could be be a source of capital for rice and other crops. It can also finance household expenditures such as schooling of children, clothing, electricity and emergency expenses. It also secured food. Small animals like poultry provide eggs and meat, while goat produce milk. Animal by-products were also used in crop production as fertilizers while crop by-products were used as animal feeds. The integration was found to lower the cost of production. This resulted in savings and thereby higher income for the family. With the increase in income, the economic status of the farmers was elevated.
