Impact of nitrogen application on growth and productivity of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

A field study was carried out to determine the influence of varying nitrogen levels (zero, 70, 140 and 210 kg N ha-1) applied to wheat cultivars i.e. Inqlab-91 and Bakhar-2000 during 2003-04. Data for various growth and yield parameters of the crops were collected and analyzed. Bakhar-2000 produced significantly more and taller plants through out the crop growth and each increment of nitrogen increased plant height significantly. Significantly higher number of tillers and fertile tillers was achieved with Bakhar-2000 and nitrogen applied at the rate of 210 kg ha-1 gave highest these numbers further, this cultivar produced higher 1000-grain weight as well as grain yield than Inqlab-91. Briefly, each increment of nitrogen fertilizer responded better to growth, and productivity of cultivars.
