Effect of plastic films on the quality and shelf life of pummelo (Citrus grandis (L.) osbeck) segments

Pummelos harvested at 7 months after fruit set were cleaned and peeled in a clean room. The segments with removed membrane and seeds, were then packed in 3 different packaging : polypropylene trays and over wrapped with polyvinyl chloride (PVC), shrink wrapped with polyolefin (D 955) and antifog polyolefin (RD 106) films and stored at 2 deg C. Randomly selected samples were evaluated for changes in physical and chemical properties, microbial contamination and sensory quality every 4 days. The results demonstrated that the segments wrapped with PVC had significantly greater weight loss and higher CO2 concentrations in the package than those wrapped with D955 and RD106, while the flesh firmness, pH, vitamin C, TSS, TA and TSS/TA were not significantly different. Total plate count (TPC) and yeast and mold in the products of all treatments were in safe levels when stored not longer than 28 days at 2 deg C.
