Germination of seed of Red and Green Kangaroo Paw (Anigozanthos manglesii D. Don) is usually low which hinders the propagation of sexually generated progeny and impedes plant breeding activities. This study was undertaken to investigate the basis of these germination problems and to improve germination percentage. Seeds of this species were shown to posses two mechanisms for regulation seed germination, both of which were external to embryo. Excised embryos germinated freely on 1/4 MS medium with/without light. The first barrier is the permeability of testa and can be eliminated by soaking seeds in 5M KOH or 50 percent H2SO4 or nicking. The other barrier was physiological and could be solved by soaking seeds in 10mMGA3 or 0.8 percent KNO3. Combining Scarification by KOH or H2SO4 with GA3 or KNO3 gave nearly complete germination. Moist stratification at 5 deg C did not increase germination and caused secondary dormancy.
