Efficiency of soy protein concentrate in diets of weaned piglets

The aim of this experiment was to determine the influence of HP 300 soy protein concentrate on the wellness, intestine microflora, growth rate and feed consumption in weaned piglets. Nineteen control (CP) and 19 experimental piglets (EP) were used. Control animals were fed fish meal. All measurements were carried out after 27 and 41 days of the test. EP gained significantly more weight during the whole period than CP (446.1 g vs. 376.7 g on average). The average feed intake per pig and day was slightly higher in EP than in CP (0.774 vs. 0.660 kg) but the feed conversion efficiency was comparable in both groups. The amount of enterobacteria decreased gradually in EP, whereas in CP a slight increase was observed after the first 27 days of the experiment and a sharp decrease was noticed between the day 27 and 41. Final counts were lower by about 12% in both groups. In conclusion, feeding the soy protein concentrate had positive effects on the growth of weaned piglets. It may replace the fish meal.
