Corona and pollinarium diversity in Philippine Hoyas

Fifteen Hoya species were characterized for genetic diversity in terms of some floral traits. These are Hoya bicolor Kloppenburg, H. buotii Kloppenburg, H. carnosa R. Brown, H. coriacea Blume, H. crassicaulis Elmer ex Kloppenburg, H. cuminginana Decaisne, H. densifolia Turczaninow, H. meliflua (Blanco) Merrill, H. merrillii Schlechter, H. mindorensis Schlechter, H. obscura Elmer ex Burton, H. pubicalyx Merrill and H. siarae Kloppenburg. Mature inflorescences were collected from each species and examined under the microscope. Sample flowers were measured for the following characters: length and width of the corona, pollinarium and retinaculum. These floral traits are used by taxonomists and botanists in identifying and delineating Hoya species. Results showed wide variation as well as close relationship among species in terms of the parameters tested. Hoya pubicalyx and H. coriacea had the largest values for corona, pollinarium and retinaculum measurements. The lowest values for most traits were observed in H. obscura. A dendrogram was generated illustrating the clustering of Hoya species into distinct genetic groupings. Hoya coriacea and H. obscura are the most genetically distinct pair of Hoya species, while close genetic similarity was observed between H. bicolor and H. crassicaulis. Experimental data provide additional information for research workers and hobbyists useful for taxonomic identification, breeding and other relevant investigations.
