Toxicity of extract from roots of derris (Derris elliptica Benth) and synergism with piperonyl butoxide (PBO) 10 ppm was observed against asiatic corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee)), using the extracts containing different concentrations of the active substance, rotenone. The LC sub(50) of derris extract to 2nd-3rd instar larvae were 30.71 ppm and 4.28 ppm at 3 and 5-day post exposure, respectively. PBO at 10 ppm showed 3-fold synergism with derris extract at 3-day post exposure but at 5-day post exposure showed no synergism, indicating that PBO can accelerate the toxicity of rotenone. However, mortality of the larvae fed with the extract containing rotenone 10 ppm plus PBO 10 ppm not increased. Antagonism was exhibited by the mixture of extracts from derris and neem (Azadirachta indica var. siamensis Valeton).
