Efficacy of nutrition intervention on the anthropometric and blood profile of at risk coronary heart disease subjects

Sixty males belonging to teaching community of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana who had risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD), were selected. The study was conducted in three phases. In phase I dietary pattern of the subjects was recorded, anthropometry measured and blood profile analysed. In phase II personalized and intensive nutrition counselling through dietary manual was imparted for a period of 6 months at 2-week intervals. Nutrition intervention trial for consuming 500g/day of antioxidant and fibre rich fruits and vegetables was carried out. Post test was conducted in phase III of the study. Based on the information collected in phases I and III of the study, the results were analyzed statistically. The consumption of pulses, vegetables, fruits and skim milk had significantly increased, whereas that of cholesterol, sugar and fat (both visible and invisible) had significantly decreased. Intake of ascorbic acid, p-Carotene, folacin, dietary fibre, potassium and sodium had significantly increased. There was a significant decrease in weight, BMI, W:H ratio, MUAC, TSFT, systolic and diastolic BP, blood glucose, total cholesterol, LDL-C and triglycerides.
