Variability in Tilletia barclayana, the causal organism of kernel smut of rice

The studies were conducted to determine the morphological, cultural and pathogenic variations among six isolates, of Tilletia barclayana, designated as Tb-1, Tb-2,Tb-3, Tb-4,Tb-5, and Tb-6 collected from different locations of Punjab. Size of teliospores of different isolates ranged from 22.01µm and their germination varied from 10-11.5 percent. Sporidial production varied significantly among the isolates. The isolates also exhibited variation in their colour and rate of colony growth. Isolates Tb-b proved highly virulent and produced maximum disease incidence and coefficient of infection wheras it was least in isolate Tb-5. Averages disease incidence of these isolates varied from 4.2-14.4 on different genotypes of rice. Based on values of coefficient of infection different genotypes were found to show different pathogenic behaviour against different isolates. The variety, PR-106 showed resistant (2R) response and varieties PR-115 and PR-116 showed to moderately susceptible (2S) response to all the isolates. Genotypes PR-111, PR-113, PR-114, and 10A showed resistant to moderately resistant to moderately susceptible response whereas PR-103, IR-8, Jaya showed resistant to susceptible and 11A showed resistant to highly susceptible response to different isolates. Present investigations have clearly indicated the existence of morphological, cultural and pathogenics variations in different isolates. Based on differential pathogenic behaviour these isolates have been divided into four groups.
