Effect of available soil moisture depletion levels and topping treatments on growth rate and total dry biomass in chickpea

Response of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) to four available soil moisture depletion levels (ASMDL1-50%, ASMDL2-65%, ASMDL3-80% and ASMDL4 -95%) and four topping treatments (T1- nipping at 5 cm from ground level, T2 nipping at 10 cm from ground level, T3 - removal of 2 cm growing tips, T4 -control) were studied at Arid Zone Research Institute, Bhakkar, Pakistan during 2004-05 and 2005-06. Crop growth rate and total dry biomass was significantly affected by ASMDL and topping treatments. Maximum plant height was recorded in ASMDL1 (68.93 cm) and it was decreased 25 percent by severe cutting (T1). Number of pods bearing branches per plant was maximum (19.61) in ASMDL3 x T3 which was declared by 50 percent in ASMDL1 x T1x T1 delayed maturity and reduced 34 percent flower duration. Water deficit (ASMDL4) decreased 23 percent total dry biomass and maximum water use efficiency (48.18 kg/ha/mm) for total dry matter was recorded in ASMDL3. Biological yield was decreased by 22 percent severe topping (T1). Maximum crop growth rate (14.10 g/m2 /d) was recorded in ASMDL3 x T3 during 2005-06. It was concluded that 80 percent available soil moisture depletion level ASMDL3) with mild topping (T3) proved to be the best for higher CGR (11.77 g/m2 /d) and total dry matter (7644.22 kg/ha) in chickpea.
