Bats surveyed in Negros provinces [Philippines]

The mammal group is one of many species that makes the Philippines uniquely diverse. This group has been considered diversely rich in terms of per-unit-area and high rate of discovery. Included in the group is Order Chiroptera representing some 25 species of bats belonging to 6 families. In a span of 50 years, very few but noteworthy studies on bats have been conducted. Notable was the discovery of Dobsonia chapmani, an endemic fruit bat living inside a cave in Mabinay, Negros Oriental. This study by Tababa et al. (NSCA/SUAKCREM) aimed to provide preliminary result of a survey and training exercise. It also intended to confirm the presence of D. chapmani in Central Negros and to determine the species of bats in the area. The study was conducted from April 27 to June 25, 2006. Findings of the study showed the following results: The study observed that at least four caves were inhabited by bats. In the areas studied, 16 species of bats belonging to 6 families were identified representing the Suborders Microchiroptera (insect bats) and Megachiroptera (fruit bats). The presence of Hipposideros lekaguli, a species that was not previously reported in Negros Island, was recorded. Threats to bat populations were also identified from interviews conducted; the main threat was hunting. Although the preliminary information on bat species in Mabinay and Kabankalan was provided in the study, it also identified a possible new record for the area. The study confirmed the absence of D. chapmani in its former habitat in Mambajo 1 cave. Recommendations included: 1) investigating further the enigmatic Hipposideros lekaguli; 2) conducting comprehensive inventories of cave-dwelling bats that are subjected to hunting and other forms of disturbances by humans; and 3) conserving bats of Central Negros in order to protect important species like the endemic nectar-feeding Eonycteris robusta. This species, together with other nectar-feeding bats helps pollinate trees and play a key role in orchard production.
