Screening of copper resistance strains was carried out from 314 lactic acid bacteria isolated from Thai fermented foods. Out of 314 isolates, 107, 65 and 2 isolates could resist to copper sulfate up to 10, 20 and 25 mM, respectively. The plasmid profiles of resistant isolates were studied by agarose gel electrophoresis. Most of the isolates contain 1 to 12 plasmids ranging in size from 2 to 150 kb. PCR was used to identify copper resistance plasmid using the primers design based on lcoC gene encoding copper binding protein from Lactococcus lactis. No PCR product of expected size was obtained from 36 isolates tested. Southern hybridization using probe prepared from copper resistance plasmid pND951 was performed. No positive signal could be detected among the 63 isolates of rod-shaped lactic acid bacteria tested. Positive signal was detected from 1 isolate of cocci-shaped lactic acid bacteria, V13.
