Objective of the present study was to compare the quality of cryopreserved boar sperm after using BTS and Modena semen extender during holding time. Sperm-rich fraction from 7 proven boars was used in the experiment. The ejaculated semen was divided into 2 parts and each part was kept in BTS or Modena for 2 hour before further processing. The semen was cryopreserved by traditional nitrogen method. The cryopreserved semen was thawed in warm water at 50 deg C for 12 sec. After thawing the semen was assessed for sperm qualities. The results revealed that individual motility, sperm viability, normal apical ridge, plasma membrane integrity and intact acrosome between semen extended in BTS and Modena were 19.3 vs 24.7 percent (P LT 0.05), 31.7 vs 31.9 percent (P=0.87), 17.7 vs 20.9 percent (P=0.44), 32.4 vs 32.0 percent (P=0.81) and 39.3 vs 39.5 percent (P=0.79), respectively. These data indicated that the use of Modena during the holding time yield a better semen quality than BTS in term of individual motility and normal apical ridge.
