Cellulose was extracted from papaya peels by NaOH and then cellulose was modified by chloroacetic acid to obtain carboxymenthyl cellulose from papaya peel (CMCp). Infrared (IR) Spectrophotometer was used to investigate the change of functional group from cellulose to carboxymethy cellulose. IR spectrum confirmed by dramatically increasing area under peak C=O at 1600/cm, peak -CH2 at 1420/cm and peak -O- at 1060/cm. Effect of blending composition of CMCp/corn starch film blends on mechanical properties (tensile strength and percent elongation) and water vapor permeability (WVP) was investigated. Addition of corn starch in blended film trended to increase tensile strength but decrease percent elongation. The ration of blended film of CMCp/corn starch at 25:75 gave the maximum tensile strength. This ration was used to investigate the effect of plasticizer (glycerol) on mechanical properties and water vapor permeability (WVP). When glycerol was added into film blends, tensile strength decreased, but percent elongation and WVP increased.
