Determinación del organismo causal de la Raya Roja de la caña de azúcar en Cuba

Se estudiaron las características morfológicas, bioquimicas y culturales, asi como la patogenicidad de ocho cepas de bacterias aisladas de cañas enfermas con raya roja en las fases :'rayado de las hojas' y "pudrición del cogollo". Se determinó hidrólisis de almidón y gelatina; producción de indol, amoníaco y ácido sulfídrico, peptonización y coagulación de leche simple; acidificación, alcalinización y reducción de leche tornasolada; reducción de nitratos, fermentación de carbohidratos y accción lipolítica. También se tomó en cuenta el Gram, forma y tamaño de la célula bacteriana; así como su movilidad, producción de cápsulas y formación de esporas. Las propiedades culturales se estudiaron sobre los medios agar de papa, agar de papa-dextrosa, agar de Czapeck y caldo nutriente. La patogenicidad se determinó por inoculación artificial sobre la varicdad B. 4362, altamente susceptible a la raya roja. Los resultados revelan la existencia de varias especies y razas de bacterias, no reportadas antes en Cuba, como causantes de enfermedades en la caña de azúcar.

The morphologlcal, biochemist and cultural characteristics were studied, as welIl as the pathogenesis of eigit strains of bacteria isolated from red stripe diseased sugarcane in the stages "stripe of the leaves" and "rot of the top". Starch hydrolysis and gelatin, indol production, ammonia and sulphydric acid; peptonization and coagulation of milk, acidification, alkalinization and reduction of litmus milk; nitrates reduction, carrbohydrates fermentation and lipolytic action, were also determined and the Gram, shape and size of the bacterial cell was considered, as well as mobility, capsule production and spolores formation. The cultural characteristics were studied on potato-agar, potato-dextrose-agar, Czapeck agar and nuutrient broth medium. The pathogenicity was determined by artificial inoculatión of the highly susceptible variety B. 4362 to red stripe. The results show the existence of several species and strains of bacteria not reported before in Cuba as causal agent of diseases in sugar cane.
