El floema y xilema de los nudos de tipo A y B tienen células hipertrofiadas y sus tejidos presentan grados variables de distorsión, la madera tiene menos elementos vasculares y fibras que el tejido normal, en la corteza se encuentra gran cantidad de micelio y sobre su superficie emergen parcialmente los picnidios. La nudosidad de tipo C tiene los tejidos distorsionados, su madera está muy lignificada y son de carácter permanente en la planta. Esporas de Sphaeropsis tumefaciens germinan sobre un callo cultivado "in vitro" y completa su ciclo produciendo picnidios sin llegar a destruir totalmente el callo, también crece sobre plántulas estériles, cultivadas en medio líquido. El tejido del nudo tiene 81 por ciento más de proteína total, 56 por ciento más de P y 85 por ciento más de N que el tejido normal. No se ha podido determinár si el crecimiento de los nudos es autónomo o requiere de la presencia permanente del patógeno.
