There is a lack of information about wild animals concerning physiological characteristics and reference values, which is a necessary knowledge for the successful breeding and management of these animals. This review article summarizes the results of studies on blood profile of eland (Taurotragus oryx). Only six studies have been published to date. They were carried out under different conditions, using different testing methods and on a very limited number of animals. Three phases of laboratory examination of blood composition, pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic, are described in this article. The values of different blood variables can be influenced by many factors such as the age and sex of the animal, diet, breeding conditions, environmental factors, stress, handling procedures, sedation and analytical methods used.
