Effects of Liming and N and P Fertilizers on Grain Yield of Barley.

Soil avidity is one of the major limiting factors to crop production in the Bedi Plateau. A field study on the response of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) to liming under different S and P levels was conducted for four years (1978 to 81) on an acidic soil at Bedi, Ethiopia. Ground limestone (Ca CO,) at 0, 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 t/ha and N/P levels at 0/0,30/13. 60/26 and 90/39 'kg/ha were applied. Lime was broadcast and mixed with the soil a month before sowing. Fertilizer (urea and triple superphosphate) was applied in bands along the rows at the time of sowing. The results indicated that 3 t/ha of limestone was adequate to maintain barley grain yields of 15 q/ha or higher. The residual effect of liming on grain yield was minimal. Grain yield responded significantly to 60/26 kg/ha of N/P and continued to provide a mean yield of 15 q/ha for a period of four years. Liming increased soil pH by 25.2% while the changes on available P, exchangeable Ca and Mg were negligible. The percent content of IV, P, Mn and Zn in the plant tended to increase ewith liming.
