Coprinus comatus, a nutraceutical mushroom

Coconut water was found to be the most appropriate medium for the growth of Coprinus comatus. It favored the efficient colonization of the mycelia of C. comatus within 8 days of incubation producing a uniform, cottony vigorous mycelial growth with zonation pattern. C. comatus grown in sealed plates of coconut water gelatin (pH 6.5) produced very dense mycelial growth, 6 days after incubation in the dark. C. comatus cultivated at 8:2 ratio (by weight) of sterilized sawdust and rice grit showed the earliest initiation of fruit bodies at 8 days after inoculation with 18% biological efficiency. Results of the nutraceutical analysis showed that C. comatus contains eight essential amino acids namely valineleucinelysineisoleucinethreoninephenylalaninetryptophanmethionine in decreasing order of abundance. C. comatus also contains non-standard amino acids, ornithine and alpha-amino butyric acid (GABA) in addition to its standard amino acid contents. The presence of Ornithine indicates the potential of this mushroom for the treatment of diabetes. Results of the in vitro assay confirmed its antihypertensive properties. C. comatus is a nutraceutical mushroom which can provide medical or health benefits including the prevention and treatment of disease. C. comatus is not toxic to mice which validates claims that it is an edible mushroom.
