Impact of guava, Psidium guajava leaf powder and ethanol extract as hypolipidemic agents

The lipid lowering effect of guava leaf powder and ethanol extract was carried out as hypolipidemic using Albino rats fed on high fat diet supplemented with cholesterol and cholic acid 1 % and 0.25 % respectively. The data were compared with rats fed on standard diet (Negative control). Induced hypolipidemia resulted in the elevation of serum levels of TC, TG, TL, LDL-C, VLDL, risk ratio, atherogenic index and TG / HDL-C ratio and lowered serum level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), chylomicronaemia ratio and HDL / PC ratio. Also feeding on high fat diet was accompanied with impaired liver and kidney functions. Administration of guava powder and its ethanol extract significantly lowered TC, TG, TL, LDL-C, VLDL-C, risk ratio, atherogenic index and TG / HDL-C ratio and increased the serum level of HDL-C, chylomicronaemia ratio and HDL / PC ratio. Furthermore, the impaired liver and kidney functions of rats administrated guava leaf (powder or ethanol extract) were recovered and nearly reached levels similar to that of the negative control.
