An experimental live vaccine derived from Suri strain of hog cholera virus was tested for its safety in SPF and commercial pigs and for its immunogenicity in field trials. SPF piglets given either E- (Suri strain) or LOM BK+ virus vaccine did not show any untoward clinical symptoms such as anorexia, fever and death, but exhibited a mild swelling and congestion of lymphnodes, proliferation of reticuloendothelial cells in spleen and lymphnodes 5 to 10 days post-vaccination. Some of the vaccinated piglets showed a mild petechiation in urinary bladder and glial cell activation in cerebrum at 5 days post-vaccinated but these lesions were subsided and were not found after 10 days post-vaccination. In field trials of the experimental E- vaccine, 3,800 piglets given first vaccination at 30-40 days old and second vaccination at 60-70 days old showed a significant immune responses without undesirable side-reactions. In addition 1,200 neonatal piglets given precolostral vaccination also showed a similar antibody responses without side-reactions suggesting that E- vaccines were considered to be as effective as LOM BK+ vaccine for immunizing against hog cholera virus. Nevertheless the vaccine produced from Suri strain could easily be discriminated from wild type of hog cholera virus by its END negative and WEEV interference characteristics.
