The effects of type of silage and of slaughter weight on growth rate, dressing percentage and carcass quality were studied in a 3 x 2 factorial design with finishing bulls. Experimental animals were 42 yearling bulls of the German Friesian breed with an initial weight of 305 kg. Bulls were allocated to three groups receiving either maize silage in the dough stage (group A), ensiled sugar beet leaves without tops (group B) or haylage with 56 % DM (group C) as the sole basic feed. All animals got 3 kg concentrates per day throughout the fattening period. 7 bulls out of each group were slaughtered at a final weight of 550 kg and 600 kg, respectively.
