Methods and results of treatment of femur fractures in 381 dogs and 132 cats are described. The investigation was performed at the Norwegian College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Surgery, for the years 1974-1983. Results of treatment were based on a questionnaire to the owners regarding observed lameness or soundness after healing. The most successful results in all kinds of diaphyseal fractures were obtained after internal plate fixation. In multiple fractures plate fixation was superior to the other methods investigated. Good results were obtained following intramedullary pinning of supracondylar fractures. Satisfactory results were found when transverse and oblique fractures were fixed with intramedullary pins. Additional fixation using cerclage-wire with intra medullary pinning showed less favourable results. Clinical instability following intramedullary pinning of the diaphysis in dogs was observed in 30% of the cases. Resection of the femoral head after fractures of the femoral head or neck showed poor results of restitution.
