The method of gamete selection described here involves plant-to-plant paired hybridization. The male parent is heterozygous and heterogametic, and is often the F1 of a multiple cross. The female parent is the recipient popular cultivar or another F1, hybrid. During hybridization, the F1, seed 4 (e.g., for Arc genes for resistance to bruchids) and plant parts (e.g., leaves for I and Are genes for resistance to BCMV and anthracnose, respectively) of multiple-cross donor parents (and the final crosses) are screened for desirable dominant and codominant alleles before or during flowering. Thus, further plant-to-plant paired hybridization is made between selected male and female plants. The F2 seed from each surviving F1 plant of final cross is sown in a separate plant-to-progeny row to develop F1 derived families for subsequent evaluation, identification, and selection of desirable recombinant genotypes. Separate complementary replicated nurseries are used for each major biotic and abiotic constraint. Yield trials are carried out in contrasting environments from early generations (F2, F3, F4). Through the nurseries and trials, promising populations and families within populations can be identified for subsequent use in the development of superior cultivars. Gamete selection should also maximize the efficiency and reduce the costs of molecular-marker-assisted improvement of agronomic traits in common bean and other species.
